Custom screening lets you define exactly who should participate in your research by asking tailored questions and applying qualification rules. Instead of relying on generic criteria filters, you can design a screener that fits each project’s needs and automatically accept or reject participants based on their answers.

Use Custom screening when you need:

  • More control over who joins your study

  • Project-specific eligibility criteria that go beyond the available criteria

  • A clear way to review responses and qualification status per participant

Custom screening works for both:

  • Recruit on my own – when you bring your own audience

  • Recruit from a panel – when you recruit from Genway’s panel or connected partners

Custom screening is available for all project types in Genway, including:

  • AI Moderated Interview

  • AI Moderated Survey

  • AI Moderated Usability

Step 1: Open Custom Screening For Your Project

  • Create or open an existing project in Genway.

  • Go to the Share tab in the edit project page.

  • Open the Custom screening section.

Step 2: Add Custom Screening Questions

Click Add question to create a new screening question.

For multiple-choice questions, define:

  • Question – What you want to ask

    • Example: “How often do you order food delivery in a typical week?”

  • Description (optional) – Additional text displayed below the question

    • Example: “Please choose one of the options below”

  • Type – Single or multiple choice

  • Answer options – Options participants choose from, including qualification logic

    • Example: “Never – Disqualified”, “Monthly – Neutral”, “Weekly – Qualified”

You can add as many screening questions as needed to capture your eligibility criteria.

Configure Response Customizations

Answer randomization
Randomize the order of answer options per participant by checking the “Randomize order of answers” checkbox. This helps reduce bias when participants select from a list.

All-answers enforcement (multiple-choice only)
Activate this by toggling on “To qualify, all Answer options for qualification must be selected.” When enabled, participants must select all QUALIFIED options. Neutral answers do not impact qualification.

Qualification Logic

Single select

  • Participant qualifies if a Qualify or Neutral answer is selected.

  • Participant is not qualified if a Disqualify answer is selected.

Multi select

If “Answer options for qualification must be selected” toggle is ON:

  • Participant must select all Qualify answers to qualify.

  • Neutral answers have no effect.

  • Selecting any Disqualify answer results in not qualified.

If the toggle is OFF:

  • Participant qualifies if at least one Qualify or Neutral answer is selected.

  • Selecting any Disqualify answer results in not qualified.

Save Your Custom Screening

Once your questions and logic are ready, click Save.

Preview the Participant Experience

After saving, start a demo of the project to see how the screening will appear to participants.

In the preview you can:

  • Walk through each question in the same order participants will see them

  • Verify randomization, multi-select rules, and qualification logic

View Screening Analysis

After you publish the project and participants complete the screener, go to the Responses page.

Individual Response View

For each participant, you’ll see:

  • Their answers to each screening question

  • Whether they were Qualified or Disqualified

Aggregate Summary Table

You can also view a table summarizing all screening answers across participants:

  • Distribution of answers per question

  • Total qualified vs. disqualified counts
