Overview

An AI Moderated Usability session is an adaptive, conversational approach to usability testing where an AI agent guides participants as they interact with a product, prototype, or feature. Unlike traditional usability studies that require a live moderator, the AI provides real-time prompts, observes user behavior through their responses, and asks follow-up questions to uncover friction points, expectations, and thought processes. This method allows teams to gather rich qualitative insights at scale, ensuring consistent moderation while still capturing the nuances of user experience. It’s best used when you want to validate user flows, identify usability issues early, or understand how real users navigate key tasks, without the logistical overhead of human-moderated testing.

Step 1: Create a New Project - AI Moderated Usability

To begin, navigate to Create a Project in your Genway dashboard. Select AI Moderated Usability and give your project a name.
Example: Google Maps – Find the Nearest Coffee Shop

Step 2: Provide Background Information

1. Enter the Task Title

  • Example: Google Maps – Find the Nearest Coffee Shop.

2. Describe the Scenario

Provide context to your usability task.
Example: “You're in an unfamiliar part of the city and would like to grab a coffee. Your goal is to use Google Maps to find the nearest coffee shop and get directions to it.”

After completing the title and description, click Next Question.

3. Add Your Figma Prototype Link

This step is crucial - ensure your prototype link is accessible and properly configured.

To successfully import your Figma project into Genway:

  1. Change your Figma file permissions to ‘Anyone.’

  2. Copy the Prototype Link from Figma and upload it to Genway.

  3. Click Import Prototype.

For detailed instructions go to Importing a Figma Prototype article

Once the prototype is imported:

  • Select a Start Screen and an End Screen.

  • Add Screen-Specific Questions for the AI Agent to ask participants when they reach particular screens.
Example: “Ask the participant what factors they consider when choosing a coffee shop.”

4. Define Project Guidelines

In the General Project Guidelines section, provide any extra context that helps the AI Agent run meaningful usability sessions. Example: “Ask the participant about their favorite type of coffee.”

Once your questions and guidelines are ready, click Create a Draft Project.
