Overview

An AI Moderated Interview is a fully qualitative research method where an AI agent conducts in-depth, human-like interviews with participants. The AI follows a structured discussion guide but adapts dynamically to each participant’s responses, probing for context, motivations, and emotions much like a skilled moderator would. This approach allows teams to collect rich, story-driven insights at scale, without the scheduling and resource challenges of traditional interviews. It’s best used when you need to deeply understand user perceptions, decision-making processes, or experiences - such as exploring customer journeys, testing new concepts, or uncovering unmet needs.

Step 1: Create a New Project - AI Moderated Interview

To begin, navigate to Create a Project in your Genway dashboard. Select AI Moderated Interview and give your project a name.

Example: Netflix Customer Churn Analysis

Choose Your Project Creation Method

You have three options to start crafting your project:

  1. Use GenwayGPT - A ChatGPT-like experience to create your project through prompt.

  2. Fill Out a Form - A guided workflow with five essential questions that help Genway structure your research context.

  3. Talk to an AI Agent - An AI Agent interviews you to collect project details and automatically generate your project setup.

Step 2: Describe Your Project

Option 1: Using GenwayGPT

  • Enter your project description and context using the GenwayGPT prompt.

  • The more details you include, the more accurately Genway identifies Topics, Objectives, Desired Outcomes, Target Audience, and Project Guidelines.

  • Click Proceed to continue.

Option 2: Filling Out a Form

  1. Review the five key questions displayed on the left panel.

  2. For each question, type your detailed response on the right side, using the provided suggestions to strengthen your answers.

  3. Click Save and Analyze Answer after each response. If improvements are needed, Genway will prompt you with recommendations.

  4. Continue until all five questions are complete, then select Create a Draft Project.

Option 3: Talking to an AI Agent

  • Enable your microphone, choose your preferred AI Agent voice (e.g., Alex or Rebecca), and begin the interview.

  • Once complete, the AI Agent automatically generates your project details.

Your project is now created.

  • Left panel: Configuration Area

  • Right panel: Sandbox Environment

Step 3: Validate Your Project Details

This step is especially crucial if you created your project using GenwayGPT or by talking to an AI Agent.

Go to Project Details and review each question carefully. To edit, click the pencil icon and make the update. Keep in mind that changes made in one section will not automatically update others, so if you need to adjust something across multiple answers, review and edit each one individually.

  • The first four questions - Objectives, Topics, Project Outcomes, and Audience define your research foundation and cannot be edited after publishing.

  • The Project Guidelines control how the AI Agent moderates the interview. These can be updated post-launch.

Project Guidelines Example:
“At the beginning of the interview, ask the participant how long they have been subscribed to Netflix.”

Once satisfied with your project setup, move on to configuration and settings to finish personalizing your AI-moderated interview workflow.
